Goal

Between 2005-2012, the major goal of the Center on Instruction was to supply to the 16 Regional Comprehensive Centers and state departments of education research-based information, products, guidance, and analyses on literacy, mathematics, and science instruction for all students, including English language learners and special education students. To achieve this goal, the core of our work included:

  • Identify and evaluate relevant research studies and other technical assistance resources;
  • Synthesize studies across bodies of research;
  • Benchmark and identify best practices;
  • Translate these syntheses and best practices into materials, training, and other resources useful for those working with state and district education systems; and
  • Disseminate these materials as well as pertinent USED guidance related to ESEA.

Priorities

The work of the Center on Instruction supports the U.S. Department of Education's key priorities, including, but not limited to:

  • Implementing internationally benchmarked college and career-ready academic standards with aligned instructional materials;
  • Promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM);
  • Meeting the needs of diverse learners regardless of nationality, first language, ethnicity, family income, zip code, achievement level, or disability status;
  • Improving the achievement of English learners; and
  • Enabling data-based decision-making and evidence-based decision-making.
